As a lifelong Minnesotan and first generation Minneapolis resident, I am proud of the progressive values that have been instilled in me by my community.
My love of parks comes from the mentorship and inspiration I received from volunteer coaches in youth sports like soccer growing up. I saw how effective my coaches and rec staff were at getting girls like me outside and in nature. I saw them advocate to city officials for better fields and facilities. Most importantly- I saw how they worked to instill a sense of teamwork and respect for both my teammates and my opponents.
I am a 3rd generation human social service provider raised by an AFSCME Union member. My mother’s involvement in the union taught me how worker’s rights directly support entire families. As a youth crisis specialist, I have seen firsthand how parks and youth programming can give a sense of normalcy and belonging to kids experiencing trauma. I also see firsthand where our park system sometimes lets down our youth.
The power of community organizing was taught to me through my time in the United Methodist Church. I learned the importance of building strength within our community by spending time with my unhoused neighbors serving breakfast, having conversations, and connecting on the things that really connect us all.
Now, my commitment is you and your family as a I run to be one of your next At-Large Park Board Commissioners and help build a park system that works for all of us- not just some.
